Mind & Emotions

Why Do We Feel Guilty for Things We Could Not Control?

Guilt can create the feeling that you should have prevented an outcome even when you did not have that power.

After something painful happens, the mind may replay every choice and imagine a better result. This can create a false sense that you had more control than you truly did.

Healthy guilt points to a real action that went against your values. Unfair guilt makes you responsible for another person’s choices, hidden information, chance, or an outcome no one could guarantee.

Responsibility can be honest without becoming punishment. You can learn from your part while releasing what never belonged to you.

Ideas you could consider

  • You could ask what information and power you actually had at the time.
  • It may help to imagine how you would speak to a friend in the same situation.
  • You may want to make amends for your real part while setting down the rest.
